Fort George was built from 1706 – 1710, on an early battery erected by the French in the 1600s, and originally named Fort Royal, it was renamed Fort George in 1763, in honour of King George III when the British took possession of the island.
The rehabilitation of Fort George is a pilot tourism investment. It is expected that on completion of the rehabilitation the historic heritage of the Fort will be preserved, it will be utilised to present an enhanced tourism product offering to all visitors, generate increased spending by tourists, as well as trigger the development of more local attractions by tourism operators.
The project was divided into two steps: the first was the preparation of detailed designs for the rehabilitation of the entire Fort complex, including structural assessment, as well as the architectural approach and analysis of the facilities. The second step corresponded to the construction supervision during the rehabilitation works, including assistance during the bidding period and carrying out the construction inspection.

Although the contract has not been finalized, the mentioned studies have been delivered and construction supervision has begun.
